The car normally 'knows' to activate the rear wiper when reverse is selected and the front wipers are on...

I agree - if the car is out of warranty, go to your local independent. They'll be able to give them a good clean. Mine has even been known to take off pads, give them a quick chamfer on the leading edge and only charge for the cleaning

Well it's on a 54 plate so its still within warranty so I may see about getting it down to Renault.

The front wipers were not on though so it must just be a sensor.

Cheers for all your help, Trouty.

They may still want to charge you for cleaning the brakes as this could be considered wear and tear. The weirdness with the rear wipers should be covered

As discussed, the rear wiper is supposed to come on when you select reverse, but only when the front wipers are turned on. It could be as cheap and simple as a stuck relay, or as complex and expensive as a faulty UCH . Best to let the dealer sort it if the car's still under warranty.
