Totally agree, we had a diesel Alhambra which gave us no end of problems because it was driven gently in town, the Seat dealers told us we were driving it wrong and needed to drive it harder- yeah, an automatic diesel people carrier to be driven with young kids on board like a boy racer, I think not.

We had no such problems with a petrol scenic, or our current petrol Mazda (both autos) driven in similar circumstances.

I agree with the lower mileage/town driving- petrol
Higher mileages, faster roads - diesel.

People who think they know what they're doing are especially annoying to those of us who do.

Re: diesel or petrol - Advice required

I think most points have been covered (mpg, clogged filters etc) but that's no reason for me not to add my preference (and I think that's what this sort of decision mostly comes down to), I'm a petrol chap every time, I know my Espace would be faster and perhaps return a better MPG with a diesel, but having done a bit of research into Renault and their turbo 's I think I'm happier paying a bit more in everyday running costs without having the niggling worry that the inevitable catastrophe is getting closer under the bonnet.

But if you''re happy with the whole turbo diesel thing then I reckon it just comes down to test driving both variants and seeing which you like best!

I had 2 diesels, one after the other a Mk1 & Mk2 Lag both 2.2 turbos The Mk1 was pretty much trouble free at the time I had the MK1 I was travelling throughout mainly England.

I changed both the job and the car, the working location was 10 miles of mixed driving town & dual carriageway there and back. During this time I had to have for the Mk2 Lag 3 or 4 new EGRs & one new turbo . Thank Gawd it was under warranty during this time, when the warranty came to a conclusion so did the car, I'm back on petrol now.
