Unhappy To Give up & Sell or Not

Here is my predicament and I am looking for advice from fellow forum members:

I bought a 2002 Laguna II 1.6 3 weeks ago.
It came with 2 years NCT (Irish MOT) 67k miles and is in great nick for its age.

Since buying it I have discovered the following:
1. Diffs in Gearbox are about to go. 500 to fix
2. Clutch is about to go. 200 to fix
3. Back Pads & Discs very worn 250 per set + fitting.
4. Timing belt was never done 450+ to supply & fit
5. Intermittent fault in engine that according to this forum can have a multitude of causes. Cant be traced as car not showing error when plugged into diagnostic computer

I got a 3 month waranty from garage (not a main dealer) when i rang them about the issues they say electrics not covered on warranty. As car passed the NCT they are happy car is good and will not do pre-emptive repairs. If g-box fails its covered.

I am thinking of just selling the car on privately and buying another one but this time doing better homework.
Although my conscience is giving me a very hard time over this idea!!

What do others think??

Re: To Give up & Sell or Not

Sorry to hear of your woes. Sounds like the dealer who sold you the car could be a chancer - in my opinion. I think you should remind the dealer that an NCT (MOT) test is not a guaratee of quality or reliability and only relates to the intrinsic safety of the vehicle at the time of test. It is also strange that the brakes seem to have deteriorated so soon after such a test. Although it can be argued the clutch and brakes are deemed to be fair wear and tear. It is also possible the diff could last for quite some time.

Have you checked to see if you have any consumer rights in this situation as it would seem the car is not fit for purpose.

I would think in this case maybe you have been mislead and even feel quite hard done by. Selling the car on is likely to put some other poor person in exactly the same position and that is entirely up to your conscience and integrity.

Personally I coudn't do such as thing.

Re: To Give up & Sell or Not

All cars cost to run and maintain over time, you buy a used car conscious of that, it balances the relative cheapness of the price you pay. You will have to decide if continuing to own this car has more positives than negatives. Think of how much money some people put into restoring cars, though I am not suggesting your Laguna is a collector's piece

If you can't keep it, I would suggest go back to where you bought it and negotiate with them to buy it back, holding complaints to whatever consumer organisations are appropriate over their head. Or use the car as a swap with these people for something you are sure is good.

Best of luck!

Re: To Give up & Sell or Not

Check out what the contract says about the warranty. It should specifically say what it covers or not. If it doesn't it covers everything.
