Re: Renault Espace - Some Questions!

Go for the Grand, the extra space behind the rear row of seats makes all the difference!

Mine was the 2.0 16v grand (still available for a few quid spares or repair....grrr cambelt) and gave about 30-35mpg, as far as I'm aware all the 3.0 are automatics and I was given dire warnings about them from my local auto-box repair man, not to mention that the V6 is apparently a true pig to work on!

As regard to parking, I found it as easy to park the old grand as I do my normal Mk4, visibility is great and I never got the feeling I was driving anything too massive.

Re: Renault Espace - Some Questions!

3 litre V6
Don't go there if you are thinking of spares / repair models. Parts are a *****, few are available in breakers yards, supply from renault is vastly expensive and availability via independants is limited and can take time to order.

If you do fancy maintaining your own certainly go for manual, the Renault auto boxes are not like other autos. Even my local garage, who claim to specialise in auto boxes will not touch renaults.

Look at the more common 4 cylinder petrol or diesel manuals. You can also do more to the engines in situ, if you go down the V6 route you'll get used to dropping the engine out.

Re standard or LWB version, what do you need. If you need 7 seats and luggage space go for the grande, if not go for the standard. The extra foot on the length of the grande makes finding on street parking difficult, and gets a bit tight in some car parks.

Re: Renault Espace - Some Questions!

Unless you have alot of gear and an hoist you should consider greatly, about engine repairs ,on the mk3 as theres no room to get around or behind the engine insitue .best is to take the engine out and that got its own problems ----think before you buy----

Re: Renault Espace - Some Questions!

Nice one.

I am still mulling over the idea of getting an Espace, but to answer a few previous questions.....

The auto is a no-no for me,too troublesome and it's the one thing I can't fix myself.

Parts for the V6 aren't that difficult to hold of,you just need to know where to look.(although if all the V6's are autos I won't be getting one). There are lots of V6's appearing cheaply on eBay with gearbox faults,so maybe if you want to run a V6 then you need a spare one to rob bits off of it and also a recon gearbox sat in your garage ready to swap over. You could have three V6 Espaces for the price of one 2.2 diesel so it does make sense, although if you spend as long trying to fix everyones elses cars as I do,coming home and fixing your own soon looses it appeal.

I will be maintaining it myself,I don't have much of an excuse not to I'm afraid.

And as for the Grand vs Standard Espace discussion,I'd still like a Grand although I'm sure Mrs.Lag will struggle with it.That may be a blessing in disguise though, the less she drives it the less it will cost us so a Grand it is.

A silver Grand with a manual transmision and either a 2 litre 16 valve petrol or 2.2 dti engine it is then......if we decide to get one.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
