I would be tempted,if at all possible,to try and save the heatsheild.If it is loose,then there a number of things you can do,depending on where it is mounted to.
Jubillee clips can be used to great effect,as said in a previous post,and there are exhaust clamps availabe that would do the same thing.Some silencers have clamps that go all the way around them(Mk2 Astra for example),and could be modified to perform the same purpose.
If its impossible to re-fix,then you can remove it,but it's not really advisable.I have done it,but I'll leave it up to you to decide!.
