Scenic 97. Cooling issue

I just surfed in and was after any advice about an problem I have.

I own a 1997 manaul Scenic and recently saw the temp gauge start to waver. It ended up overheating and the headgasket had gone.

I had to bite the bullet and get fixed plus a head skim, new thermostat, radiator, plugs cams belt etc, not cheap given the age of he car.

My question to you experts is that previously the car always ran slightly cold, ie the temp gauge was always well below the middle line. Now the temp seems to fluctuate and as it goes slightly over the middle line getting hotter, the fans kicks in and drops it back.

Any idea if this should happen? My garage say its normal but its never happened before.

Hope that all makes some sort of sence and any help or advice is apprecaited.

Currently in DaveH's garage:
97 Megane Scenic

my stat kicks in about 2/3 to 3/4 to top. Before that the needle was always on 1/4 and the heating did not work. I checked and the stat was stuck shut, when I changed it the gauge worked as above.
