Thanks, I hadn't thought to try it in a computer. My son's laptop can burn DVDs so I will give that a go. Cheers, Steve

Re: Vel Satis 3.5 Initiale Newbie

Sorry Steve, I've been slack recently for one reason and another.

I can't comment on your petrol MPG but my diesel's MPG has definitely improved since using Millers additive/injector cleaner. I'm not sure how accurate the trip computer MPG is, and even though I log everything in spreadsheets, I never fill my tank to the top so it's hard for me to work out MPG-per-tank accurately. My dad reckons the trip computer MPG reading in his diesel Vel Satis tells slight porkies and is lower than the read-out.

Vel Satis Catchup

Hello Dave, Steve, Luke and all the other Vel Satis fans on the forum...

The forum went a bit quiet (Vel Satis wise) in August which I guess was due to a lot of us having been busy with family, holidays, etc.

So I just thought I'd start a "catchup" extension to this thread, to see how you've all been getting on with yours?

Mine has been running well, as I've been using the Millers diesel additive. It still develops a cyclical rubbing/dull chattering sound/feeling after a while, but it's not got worse in 3 months, so the mechanics all say they can't detect what it is til it gets worse. Can't be too serious then, eh. And my air con/heater did suddenly decide, the other night on the way home at midnight, to blow some hot air at less than 26 degrees. Recently it's only been blowing hot at 26/max, so the fact it blew hot air at 21 degrees maybe indicates it's a fault that can be fixed fairly easily/cheaply. That's about it as far as mine goes - oh, except it needs a bloomin' good clean, as it's parked by trees usually!

Re: Vel Satis 3.5 Initiale Newbie

Hi Olly and update is due so here we go.

I have had my 3.5 Vel for several months now. In a nutshell it has been one of the best cars/value I have ever owned. I smile every time I drive it and we have driven it quite a bit; Toulouse and back, many trips to the west country (my mum poorly - 360 mile round trip) and I have now put about 6000 miles on her.

My original plans included lowering springs, K&N induction kit, upgraded stainless exhaust. When I picked her up I had her serviced at Renault to keep up a warranty that she had, At this point I traced the service history. She had been given the following over the previous 12 months by Renault:
  • New shocks/springs/top mounts at front
  • New front brakes
  • New rear box
  • Replaced heater/aircon display (LCD failure)

So, I thought I would hold back on replacing some perfectly good kit until it fails The only concession was the K&N filter (not the complete kit) and TBH I have no idea if things are really improved but she sounds glorious I will get her sensibly chipped too soon and also have Renault update the software to undo that annoying drive shunt from cold in 'D'.

I have being having an Ebay fest with brochures, upgrade discs, manuals etc. which has given me tons of good stuff/info.

So, I love my Vel. Very much. For the money (2k) I can not think of any car that goes as well with all the comforts. The final addition has been a 'plate' - I normally hate these things but so many folk ask me "What is it? A Vel Satis? What the f**k is that" that I succumbed to a little purchase cheaply from DVLA...

Should do quite nicely

Re: Vel Satis 3.5 Initiale Newbie

Hey Dave,

Good to hear from you mate - thanks for checking in with and updating us all.

Really glad to hear you're still loving your petrol VS, your fondness growing week by week by the sounds of it. Same as me - every time I drive mine, I feel soothed (apart from over potholes/speed bumps) and remind myself why I got him.

Definitely, if your car's history says it had new brakes and suspension fairly recently, just leave those components for now - but I appreciate why you still got the K&N sorted. Yes, I wonder if it made any difference, apart from the nice sound. Would it make my diesel one sound nicer too if I got a K&N?

It'll be very interesting if and when you get yours chipped and/or the gearbox software updated. Keep us closely posted. Bit of a warning re the gearbox software, but you may have already quashed any worries about this... but I've been told by a few Renault experts that although the software update gets rid of the shunt/jolt when putting it into Drive, it then creates a jolt when going up or down between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th. I'd rather live with my jolt by gently pressing the accelerator pedal before I shift into D, than getting my software updated but it results in general driving being worse than just when setting off. I may be wrong, I'm just going by what I've been told.

Glad you've been stocking up on eBay stuff. I bought some really cheap "brand new, boxed, official Renault" front brake discs recently, and wish I hadn't, as they're not coated and I can't be bothered sourcing an air tight bag, silica gel packets to keep them dry, or other solutions. Hmm.

Hey, great number plate you've got for yourself! I'm wanting to get one for mine too, when funds allow, as even cheap plates add up to about 800-1,000 by the time the fees are added on, don't they? I can't decide if I want a VS-specific plate, a plate that combines some VS reference and also to my name, or just to my name, or to his (the car's) name. Anyway, one for the future.
