Cam/Timing Belt Change

Hi guys,

I've looked through the FAQ's, articles and the forums search engine to try and find an answer and have been unable to find one.

I own a V reg clio alize 1.4 and have done for 3 years, since then I haven't had it serviced, but its just come up to the 60k mark now.

My sister owned a 1.2 clio X reg and her belt snapped, I cant remember how many miles she had done but now I am anxious to change mine and have been told that it should be done around the 60K mark.

Is this correct? Also what kind of price am I looking at so far I've been quoted from £100-240 for one of these kits.

Also what kind of service should I be looking at getting for 60K, I haven't had it serviced since I bought it 3 years ago, but I've only done about 8K miles in it.

This is my first car so I'm quite new to all of this any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: Cam/Timing Belt Change

Never been serviced in 3 years

Regardless of mileage the oil and filter should be changed at least every 12 months.

The timing belt should be changed every 60K or 5 years whichever comes first.

So unless you have service history to prove the belt has been changed in accordance with recommendations I suggest you have it done ASAP.

A major service wouldn't go amiss either plus has the brake fluid or engine coolant ever been changed.

Re: Cam/Timing Belt Change

you're right to be anxious about the belts. mine only had 32,000 miles on it when i changed it last year, BUT it is a 9 year old car, so it was overdue, really.

kits should'nt cost that much surely, although mines a 1.2, i still only paid £42 delivered for a continental/dayco kit from a parts distributor on ebay . i was quoted £140 for one supplied and fitted from a local garage, but me & my dad done it ourselves in an hour or so.

quote from haynes manual:

"every 36,000 miles, renew the timing belt*

*note: although the normal interval for timing belt renewal is 72,000 miles, it is strongly recommended that the interval is halved to 36,000 miles on vehicles which are subjected to intensive use i.e mainly short journeys, stop-start driving".
