My First Parking Ticket

Woo hoo (said sarcastically!), I got my first parking ticket fine at the weekend! 50 for being 6 minutes late back to the car park! Well, I paid the next day so got a 50% discount down to 25, but it still hurts. I'd been feeling poorly so had spent a fair bit of time in a local loo, then had to wait ages for this bridge over the river to close before I could cross back to the car park on the other side, etc. Sure, no reasons to challenge the ticket, but it's pretty annoying as I was only 6 minutes late. There should be a sliding scale depending on how many minutes late you are, I reckon...

Re: My First Parking Ticket

Bloody hate that

I have to be honest Ive only had one parking ticket myself,It was at Dundee Hospital,i park in a disabled bay which is free but since my last visit they changed it to short stay only and they slapped on a ticket whilst i was being treated 25 but like you because i payed within a certain time scale i got off and only had to pay 10 still its better off in my pocket thats for sure... than in theirs,

Cheers Don

Better still, they should abolish Pay & Display in favour of Pay on Exit. I've hated Pay & Display for a number of reasons ever since it was introduced. You often end up buying more time than you need 'just in case', or conversely you end up rushing back to your car when you might otherwise have decided to stick around a little longer.

If you're staying somewhere all day, you're basically sticking an ad in the window saying "by all means steal my car. By the time I'm back and call the police, you could be in another country."

The wife once got fined in a Pay & Display car park because her ticket fell on the floor. She contested it and managed to get off with the charge, but the faffing around and stress that it caused were totally unwarranted considering that she'd done nothing wrong. We were still out of pocket for the cost of sending the ticket via recorded delivery.

In all honesty, if I'm ever in this situation, and the machine isn't one of those that takes your registration number, I will hang around waiting for someone to come back to their car, offer them a few quid for their valid ticket and then swear black is white that I had a valid ticket in my car, and that I can produce the ticket on request to prove it.

Maybe that should read 'in all dishonesty'

If you want to hear about stupidity, you need to see the 'free after 3' scheme that our local council is operating. As you'd imagine, you can park free after 3pm, but (and here's the good bit) you still need to get a (free) ticket from the pay & display machine. I didn't realise this when they first introduced it, and just started dumping the car there without paying after 3pm. It turns out that not only do you have to take a ticket, but the wardens are still out there issuing fines for cars that aren't displaying a valid ticket. You have to wonder whether it's a cynical ploy to confuse motorists in the hope of raising more in fines than they would in pay & display tickets.

Re: My First Parking Ticket

Got one a few months back, surprising how liberating it was, after 60+ years of trying to keep within the law I now for some reason don't give a dam, wounder if that's why we seem to have so much lawlessness these days, they get some fine for some minor offence then go for the full sheep?

Who would design a vehicle that falls over when you stop?

If you find a fix for your problem please let us know it will help others.

Re: My First Parking Ticket

I agree that Pay On Exit is a much better, less punative method of making sure people pay for their parking, without making them rush back to cars unnecessarily or pay more than they needed to.

That Free After 3 scheme sounds awful, if you still have to buy a 'free' ticket and get a fine if you don't, even though parking is technically then free!

Oh well, at least a ticket is just a fine and it's not a criminal offence as such. Still hurts though, especially when you're skint.
