Should I buy a Vel Satis?

Hey guys,

I love Renault and i love the Vel Satis. There is one for sale near me for a greta price. Its a (2003/53) 2.2 dci privilege with 80000 miles on the clock with a full renault service history. As much as i would love to dive in and buy it, i have only owned renaults and so i am fully aware of their reputation.

What are the main things to look out for and also will it be good to me? I dont want to have to throw money at it all the time but i will look after it and am willing to pay for repairs if required. Also, are they good to own? I love the car but living with one maybe very different....

Re: Should I buy a Vel Satis?

Hi there.

These are quirky (distinctive?), but very well-designed comfortable & spacious family transport. Whilst mine was running well - I loved it.

However, there are a few clouds on the horizon worth bearing in mind;

does the cambelt need changing - quite expensive

2.2 can have turbo issues

check & double check the operation of all electrics, and ensure that all the warning lights illuminate on start-up, then go out as they should

Tyres can be costly for 'branded' versions

Body-wise, they age very well, with any corrosion really showing a neglectful owner or a botched repair

worth a punt for the 'right' money, but be prepared for some big bills and plenty of "a what?" when you book it in for repairs/buy parts...(even from Renault).

These cars aren't loved by the trade, so depreciation will be severe - which is less of a problem if you plan on hanging onto it.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Re: Should I buy a Vel Satis?

FOR....Supremely comfortable, VERY different from everything else out there, great specifications.

AGAINST....Very few parts are used on other models so spares can be very expensive, steep depreciation, electrics can be problematic, most garages just take one look and shake their head.

Would i own one again? In a heartbeat if it didn't have any issues when purchased.

Re: Should I buy a Vel Satis?

You know all the reasons to buy one - didn't regret buying mine at all - went from 12k to 110k in mine - never scrimped on servicing or tyres - Conti's wore about the same as Michelins but were typically 200 a set cheaper.

Problems with mine - new dash computer needed when it switched to metric units instead of imperial - couldn't be fixed, was repared at great cost under warranty - leak from crank oil seal fixed under warranty at c. 25k - recall for new clutch master cylinder - problem with cracked inlet manifold at c.73k fixed (again at great cost) under Renault extended warranty - blown turbo oil seals at 110k - which has most definitiely not been fixed under an aftermarket warranty.

Other than that, one set of rear pads, two sets of front pads, one set of front discs. Oh, and one battery at 108k - make sure it has the right size battery fitted as GSF, Halfords etc try to tell you an 096 fits - it's not right, it's too small.

It was dealer maintained all the way bar one specialist service and an ex Renault tech who set himself up.

My only regret is not selling it sooner.....

If you're looking for a superbly maintained 2.2 diesel VS with leather 2004 on a 54 that needs a little work, buy mine......
