Difference between MOT and minor service

Hi all.

The GS just had it's MOT done last week and need a minor service in the next 2 to 3 months.
I've been looking at the Motrio service for 99 at a main dealer but TBH, all the checks were done at MOT and I can re-do the checks myself for stuff like lights, wipers and tyres etc. All I need is an oil and filter change which National Tyres will do for 26 ish (Castrol Magnatec) and I can fit an air filter (which isn't included in the 99 service) for less than 10 from EuroCarParts. The Scenic does about 8k miles per year. It had it's full service (with diesel fuel filter) last year and I will do this again for next year.

I know it may affect the service history as garages don't usually stamp oil changes but if I'm keeping it for another 3 years at least, the car will be 7 years old and probably worth no more than 2k.

What do you all think?

Re: Difference between MOT and minor service

MOT checks will be totally different to service items. MOT is checking the roadworthy condition of your cars components and they won't do any fluids, oil , screenwash, brake fluid, coolant, filters that the service will. Any half decent mechanic will also check all tyre pressures, lubricate locks, adjust the handbrake and also point out if any braking components needs replacing. I've also known them to redirect mis-aimed washer jets and occasionally wash/valet the car.

Re: Difference between MOT and minor service

I can definately see where your coming from, but in all honesty the difference between a component passing an MOT and going through a service without being mentioned as worn is quite large. An MOT is a basic safety check (some people don't realise just how basic,in fact I'd say most testers don't completely realise how bad a component has to be to fail an MOT.),a service should find many more advisory and replacement recommendations.

Having said that,if your keeping the car for a while and know what your looking at then there is absolutely no reason why you couldn't give your car a small service and check it over your self, just don't fall into the trap of thinking that an MOT is the be-all and end-all of knowing how good your car is.Check all the points that a service should cover completely disregarding that the car has just had an MOT.

Re: Difference between MOT and minor service

Alternatively, get the oil and filter change at National tyres for the 26 and get the free 25 check at Renault main dealer who gives a detailed checklist of the work carried out:

Fluid levels:
Engine oil
Brake fluid
Power steering circuit
Front & rear screen washer

Condition & seal of front/rear shock absorbers
Tyre wear/condition
Tyre pressures
Exhausts (leaks, mounting)
Condition of brake system
Leaks in brake system (external)
Condition of drive shaft bellows

Signals visibility:
Side lights, number plate
Direction indicators, hazard warning lights
Dipped/main beam headlights
Reversing lights, stop lights
Front & rear fog lights

Correct operation:
Condition and mounting of bumpers
Condition of windscreen
Condition of lights
Rear view mirrors
Operation of doors and windows
Wiper blade wear and operation of front/rear wash/wipe
Check service history and future requirements

This is the main dealer Motrio service:

Oil Change
Filter Change
Air conditioning / heating check
Leak check in cooling system
Check fuel system
Check mirrors and windscreen for damage
Check for body damage
Check for leaks in braking system
Check and adjust tyre pressure and sensors
Check battery and plugs
Check washers and wipers
Check condition of brake system
Check exhaust system
Check drive belts (excl. timing belt)
Check operation & condition of seatbelts
Check tyre tread and depth
Check all lights and signals
Check all fluid levels
Check bonnet catch
Diagnostic check of all onboard computers.

There is hardly any difference between the two? Ok, the Motrio service includes a diagnostic check but is this a plug in check or a dashboard check & reset of the service lights?

Re: Difference between MOT and minor service

I'm totaly with you.

I do all the minor servicing myself on my Laguna and Scenic (both dci). Anything too technical or bothersome and I take it to a specialist whilst asking them to look out for anything that might be coming up.

To me a box of receipts tells a better story than a service book full of main dealer stamps, especialy when they recomend 18000 mile service intervals.
