Renault Espace owner

I have fallen out of love with my very expensive to maintain Renault Grand Espace! I am looking for advice on a way to carry bikes. I had the tailgate mounted carrier but the weight meant I had to hold the boot open all the time. tricky to do when trying to put a pram or shopping in the boot. I have had it removerd and was considering the tow bar carrier.....any thoughts or experience?

Re: Renault Espace owner

Hi there - I have an Espace IV and I put the bikes on roof mounted carriers. Yes it's a bit of a stretch getting them up there, but if you need to open the tailgate (and it sounds like you do), the towbar mounted option will still obscure the tailgate opening once you have it loaded up.

I believe some of the towbar mounted carriers swing forwards to help boot access, but the Espace tailgate needs a big arc to swing through when it opens, so I don't know how effective this would be.

Good luck, Dave.

Re: Renault Espace owner

Hello debbiecs, the best solution IMO for an Espace IV is to use a towbar mounted carrier (unless you can find a generation 2 Renault OEM rear door carrier 3 bikes 60kg max load), as there are severe restrictions on using roofloaded carriers in terms of weight. Have a search on Espace roofbars, I did some examples that explain the maximum loading and some horror stories on what happens if you over load the Espace roof.

Remember the MAXIMUM load on the roof regardless of the bars used is only 80kg ... so the average bike and carrier is approx 23kg (chromoly frame ... a bit less for an aluminium frame) ... 19kg for the bike and 4kg for the carrier ... plus you need to get it up there ... not easy without ladders/steps or being very tall (Lagdti springs to mind )

Hope this helps

Why is it the older I get .... the better I think I was ?
