Arrow 2001 Clio Alize Auto

Hi I have a problem with my 2001 Renault Clio Alize (Again).
I have had my share of problems with this car since I got it. It seems prone to faults and never easy to diagnose.
This time the speedometer is intermittant. Sometimes it works, usually start of a journey, then it takes a nose dive and can stay like that until it wakes up again. Also I am noticing a funny feeling with the brake pedal, when I come to a stop. I think this maybe the ABS kicking in for some reason but I'm not sure. There are no warning lights appearing on the dash board and I have just had a service, including front brake disc and pads put on the car as they were worn and my mechanic thought this could be the reason why they were grabbing. The car is in for MOT next Friday, so knew the brakes would fail if not done but it still has not cured the problem. Will a diagnostic show up this fault?
Has anyone any idea what this fault could be and is it affordable and a worth while fix?
It is working 75% time so surely it is nothing too serious. Though from searching forums it appears it could be anything from faulty speed cable, wheel sensor, sensor on gear box, broken wire or fault in circuit board itself. I'm trying not to break the bank here in finding the correct solution.
