Is a Laguna Dci 02/03 worth considering?

I have no experience of Renault Diesels but my son is looking for a secondhand car and noticed that Renault Lagunas 2002/2003 Dci vehicles seem reasonably priced compared to similar VAG or Peugeot equivalents.

I suspect there is a reason for this and wondered if they were not reliable, or expensive to fix.

So are there any opinions as to whether these would be a worthwhile buy?

He needs a reliable car for everyday commute, which needs to be reasonably economical. Need to minimise the risk of expensive repairs as funds are tight.

Is there much difference in reliability or economy between the 1.9 Dci or 2.2 Dci?

Re: Is a Laguna Dci 02/03 worth considering?

Obviously I can only reflect on my own experience of a 2005 2.2 dCi.

I purchased the car @ 1,100 odd miles @ 9 months old, plus just over two years of warranty left. :PHEW:!!

1 Turbo & one EGR valve was replaced before the first service was due @ 18k miles. This would have cost £2,200 or there about.

I had to have 2 or 3 replacements EGRs before the car was 3 year old, Iím guessing here @ just over £800

At just over 3 years old the rear rubber bushes needed replacing, fortunately Renault covered the costs of these too.

From what Iíve seen on here the 1.9 dCi is pretty much the same.

However, there must have been 1000s of these cars made, the good reliable ones hardly ever get a mention, on a trouble shooting Forum.
Currently in hondo's garage:
1.6 Valve-Matic SR. Red hot, toasty feet.
