Not a dodgy car thief unfortunatly but maybe some help anyway.
I had EXACTLY the same problem until 1 day it wouldnt start at all. I knew it was the immobiliser. Turns out it was actually the key in mine but Renault told me it could also be the immobiliser coil . Cost me 100 quid to get a new key.Renault only charged me 55 quid for the test but it didnt bring anything up so they didnt charge me it. Maybe worth getting it checked at Renault as it "could" be a bit cheaper on the test side. Hope this helps

Tried that

Thanks for your response, I too bought a new key from Renault but it hasn't solved my problem, shame they are fitters at the garage and not proper mechanics/engineers, as they can't find a fault they just want to replace it!

When Renault told me I needed a new key but the new key made no difference at least they didn't charge me the full 150. Usually useful to have a spare key but not in my case as she is off the road again.

I've almost given up but I keep trawling forums as I am loath to let a great car die even though she is 11 years old.

They don't make em like they used to.
