Rx4 problems??

Hi new to forum and renaults bought a 2001 Renault scenic megane sport rx4 for 1000 but has got a lot of noise and vibration under the floor above 55mph also the clutch has to be pumped before it will work. After scrolling through this site found it sounds like propshaft bearings. Is it worth fixing and keeping or should i get rid i rekon i could remove it myself is it possible to replace the bearing yourself or do you need specialist tools seen dave mac propshafts sell replacemant bearings any advice appriciated.

Re: Rx4 problems??

Welcome to the forum

I dont think anyone on the forum has managed to split an RX4 propshaft...I had a go at mine, and came to the conclusion (perhaps incorrectly) that it had been friction welded together....Whilst I could have taken it to work and cut it up, I really couldn't be bothered and bought a new OEM unit and fitted it myself to save a bit.

As you've seen, since then, a few members have managed to get them refurbished and this is about half the cost of a new unit.

A couple of members have been able to split and refurbish the Trekka propshaft, have a look at the thread, it may give you some inspiration, although the Trekka is a little different to the RX4

There have been instances of the rubber coupling between the propshaft and the diff failing....this coupling is available on ebay

I'd get in on a lift with the engine running and in gear to let the wheels spin and trace the noise

Re: Rx4 problems??

Hi and welcome.

Just get under the car and look a5t the donut shaped damper forward of the rear diff.
It has 6 bolts through it and they usually fail after 60,000miles or so.

It is an easy swap for a half competent mechanic or even the home hack. I replaced mine in about an hour.

There is a thread about it here somewhere. Just search for rubber coupling and you should find it.

If it turns out to be stuffed, DaveMac Props over your way has them listed on eBay rather inexpensively. Just search Rx-4 coupling on eBay .
He also repairs/reconditions the whole tailshaft if yours is the centre bearing. Just shoot him an email via the listing and he'll reply. He did for me all the way down here in Australia.
