Also, It stops Oil contaminating the drive & badly serviced Diseasels chucking their foul fuel under motorcyclists tyres. Certainly saved me a concrete clean up when my drive shaft seal didn't line up nicely.
An absolute PITA each time it has to come off, but IMHO worthwhile. Renault wouldn't spend that much fitting one, if it wasn't worth it being there.
