Both will be calculated as 'estimated fuel left in tank' multiplied by 'average MPG since trip reset of this memory.' So I'd be more inclined to trust whichever one is more representative of the kind of driving that you're doing right now and in the near future.

Personally, I wouldn't take either of them as gospel. If you're going to go anywhere near the bottom of the red, then carry a spare can!
