Hi yes it can be changed without removing ther complete dash. You will need to remove glove box. Clamp off heater feed pipes under the bonnet (release the pressure first).Put a old towel in the foot well and undo the heater pipe screw plus the two screws that hold the matrix plate onto the heater box. Wriggle to free.
Now using a heat gun VERY CAREFULLY WARM up the heater box between the fan and distribution box.And extract the matrix. Warm up the same area to reinsert new matrix.
WARNING if you use to much heat you WILL damage the heater box housing.
NOTE this is not a renault recommended method but it works.
