Sorry Clive I cant help you further but the only connections I have ever seen on a battery are the two main terminals and some batteries with a vent hole on the side. The cable you mention may be a vent pipe with outer reinforcing to prevent it closing over and causing a build-up of explosive gases. How is the cable connected to the battery anyway. Try giving the cable a gentle tug at the battery end and see if it disconnects. Have you sourced a new battery for it yet.
P.S. I have had a look at an old battery I took out of a Clio recently and there are two terminals and a vent hole on one side
