scenic 1.9 dci, welding alternator pulley?

Hello all,

Had a rattle on the wifes scenic a few months ago, replaced the ax belt which cured it for a few thousand miles. It seems the alternator is a fault as the pulley is sticking.

I've looked around and some of the replacements do not have a free wheeling pulley on, and on one website they explain that is it not really req'd. it just allows it to overrun after fast engine speeds.

what I was wondering, could i just pop the cap off the end, weld it all together and pop it back on the car. As the charge and bearings seems fine.
