I cannot comment on the RAC/AA reports that you pay for as an individual.
But, when we bought our Pug 206cc a fews yrs ago the car was RAC inspected (all their cars at the time were), arranged by the dealer. We knew the salesmanager well and he as much as said "they aren't much use really" - he showed us the report and it was basically a glorified safety report that you can get free from most Kwik Fit type places.
Fluid levels,brakes,tyres,lights,wipers etc were about the only things shown and condition of bodywork - anyone could see by looking at it that it was in good condition.
The report did not go into any real mechanical or electrical detail. So we basically agreed with the sales manager about the worthiness of the report. But it meant the garage could advertise all their secondhand stock as "RAC inspected".
