I borrowed a colleague's Cosworth engined Scorpio for a couple of days once. I needed to shift some stuff in a trailer and didn't have a towbar on my own car at the time. I think I only managed to get it as low as 9mpg on the trip computer when hoofing it really hard. Maybe I wasn't pushing the pedal all the way to the floor
I managed to get 99.9mpg out of the Laguna yesterday. Here's the trick: Reset the trip counter as you enter the Kingsway tunnel and coast/brake for the downhill stretch of the run. I'm not sure what economy this actually gave me, but the computer was showing a range to refuel of over 4000 miles at one point.
The weird thing was that once I resumed normal driving, the economy dropped back to what I'd expect (high 30's - I was going reasonably quick) but the range never sorted itself out. I still had 2800 miles left in the tank when I got home. It sorted itself out when I stopped and restarted the engine though.
