Having ruined my previous car's lacquer by using a sponge, (lots of sand had come down with last rainfall only I didn't know it was sand before I started sponging), I then heard later DON'T use a sponge because it grabs onto all the grit and then drags it across the surface.
Instead (as recommended) I now only use a wash mitt ~ has long fibres so any grit is trapped but goes more deeply into the fibres, and so is not dragged across the rest of the car.
And yes I would use a car shampoo.
