I done same kind of driving with my old car that was a VW Golf mk4 1.9 diesel engine and i was getting around 53MPG. I just put it down to the Renault Laguna is a bigger car then the Golf. I plan to keep the Renault for couple of years but next time I do my homework on my next car i will be looking at the MPG on the younger Renaults on this site and others and if they are still not much better then other makes I may choose a VW again.
As you say that isn't really a fair comparison as the Laguna is bigger than a golf. For a better comparison you need to compare the golf with a Megane. A better comparison for VW v Reanault for a Laguna would be a Passat.
