The phase II 05 lagunas should have all the problems eliminated, having said that Lagunas from late 2003 (late 53plate on) have proved to be more reliable than earlier models and a lot of known problems have been solved. The tyre pressure sensors tolerances have been widened so are more reliable, the
failures on dci engines have been all but eliminated, so in short, yes a lot of known problems have been sorted.
The 2.0 petrol is probably the better engine to have as it will be more powerful than the 1.8, so you wont have to drive it so hard, so on a long run it should prove to be just as economical.
You could probably get a good deal on a late 2004/early 2005 pre facelift model, as the face lift models are few and far between at the moment on the secondhand market, or at least the right spec/engine/condition/mileage etc is.
