Feeding mirror switch from the ignition switch
Moving the supply from battery to ignition will only make sure that if a fire breaks out it is when you have the key in the ignition. Any modifications to wiring must be carried out by Renault - it may even invalidate your insurance should you need to claim. Fireballs advice is correct.
Lowering the fuse size is a good idea. It may not prevent a fire in every case but might catch it before its too late.
Sporty: I acknowledge the comment re: invalidation of the insurance, however, assuming that my wife drives the car for 4 hours per week (35k miles in seven years, i.e. 100 mile per week), the switch is live for 2.5% of the time instead of 100%. Seems to me that I'm reducing the risk of an incident related to this switch by 97.5%. I wonder if such a modification would be acceptable to the insurance company on this basis.
