I've been the lead car in a three car pile-up before now. As long as the driver in the frontmost car feels one bump and not two, the rearmost driver would be liable for all of the damage anyway.

I've also had a Ka as a courtesy car, and while I've never driven the Citroen C1, I'd put money on the probability that it's a nicer and much safer feeling drive. The brakes on the Ka that I had were next to useless - no ABS and the wheels would lock at the slighted provocation on anything other than a bone dry road. The girl behind you probably didn't stand a chance of stopping, though it's still her fault as she should have left more stopping distance.

If I were you, I'd ring her insurers directly regarding the hire of the Passat. They may authorise it, or they may work on the basis that they're only obliged to provide you with a working car (the Citroen) and you'll be on your own for the cost of the VW. I think you may have a fight on your hands when it comes to claiming that cost back.

Has the car gone in for repair yet? If not, then insist that it goes to a Renault dealer (the insurers might huff and puff a bit, but you do have the right to decide where the repair is carried out.) Don't get saddled with one of the accident repair specialists - they just pile the work up high and work on the basis that you're 'sorted' because they've given you a crappy little roller-skate to run round in. The last time I used that type of place (and it will be the last time) my car was off the road for three weeks just to have two buckled alloys and a front wing replaced.
