55Ah doesn't sound a great deal to me - even for a modern efficient battery. I know manufacturers are cutting down on the weight of vehicles by fitting the smallest battery they can get away with. Diesels take a reasonable amount of power to get them going, the batteries are higher capacity than the equivalent petrol models.

A battery of between 70Ah and 80Ah is specified for the 2.2dci engine, depending on hatch/estate, year of build etc etc. So you would need the 75Ah optima battery you mention - but as you say - it is physically too big to fit.
