In general, the chains are pretty bomb proof.Just think of all the BMW straight sixes that have done crazy mileages on their original chains. The early versions had a belt, but BMW changed that to a chain and it is pretty much fit and forget.Saab have fitted chains to their 2 litre 16 valve engines for donkeys years too,and I've only ever known one give problems, and that was just the
pressure feed tensioner sticking.
Vauxhall have had problems with noisy chains on the 3 cylinder Ecotec engines, and many of them were recalled. It's an easy job to replace them though as I found out a few months ago!.
Ford did have problems with the early 2litre DOHC 8 valve chains as they had a tendecy to break around the 100k mark, but it's not something I've ever had a problem with.
We will have to wait and see how Renault get on with them.....
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
