Based on my current 2005 model with handsfree and previous 2002 model without it...
If the car has the handsfree card, then you should need to press either the brake or clutch to get it to start. The display will ask you to press the brake pedal, but I find that the clutch makes more sense, since you're about to select a gear anyway.
If it doesn't have the handsfree facility, then you probably just left it in gear. Either that or the selector switch/circuitry that senses that you're in neutral has suddenly failed. If you try to start the car with the clutch engaged and a gear selected, the start button will flash and the engine will not turn over. Either selecting neutral or holding down the clutch will allow the car to start normally.
