TDC sensor is the most common reason for dead engine.
I'll bet your pads are thin. I've NEVER changed discs on a car, despite what the "experts" say. They've never been that bad. Have changed cracked disc on a bike however.
ABS n/s front sensor also serves the speedo so that one's OK.
Re service light, get your codes read / reset, but after researching the ABS fault. May be historic.
Mk1 Ph2 (which is what I think you have) have a habit of throwing up a P0420 if driven between 40 & 60 on light throttle for more than 10 minutes. This is why I bought an ELM 327 & PCMScan, just to turn off the piggin light!!!
