You are right in your last part Andrew if something is faulty the system will shut itself down and the airbag light will come on. The computers are 185 plus and hours labour from Renault.

Renault might say they can't but they can be reset for around 80 there are a couple of places in the UK that do them though the popular choice is a specialist in Germany I know of lots of people who have used them. When you buy a new one it needs to be coded to the vehicle though if you get your original reset they just reload the software but leave in the coded part so it's simply plug and play so to speak.
