Head gasket failure is especially common on the 1.6 8v engine. Mine went also a few years back, but it was a teeny weeny water leak that gradually eroded the head! Fortunately it was repairable and was skimmed.

As you have said - no problems since. The mechanic who repaired mine reckoned they don't go again once they're done (he has done many Megane/Scenic 1.6's over the years, so he said). So let's just see! Well done BTW for doing it yourself, I'm afraid basic servicing and repairs are the limit of my bravery! Although mine cost a little under 300 to fix, which was about bearable!
