To be honest there is not really a lot that can be checked without a fair bit of knowledge of what you are looking for. Even with that knowledge it is still far easier and less time consuming to get it plugged it and find out the fault code.
Is the engine running smoothly? The lambda sensors are the common fault with these cars when this light comes on. You can take it to any garage with a fault code reader and most will have one it does not have to be the Renault machine (and extorionate labour rates) to check for these fault codes.
