Renault Clio MK2 PH2 MPG

Hi Guys,
I own a 2003 clio dynamique (AC/CC) and the MPG I seem to be getting in city driving is pretty poor. The computer on it says its doing around 33.8mpg which i thought was okay.... until i realised my moms peugeot 307 1.6L was doing 35mpg and a friends 2L BMW diesel was doing over 40mpg!! and i thought oh wow my cars only a 1.2L petrol and it doesnt weigh a lot so why am I getting a lower MPG rating?

any other of you guys have this?

also when i brought the car 3 months ago I changed the oil and filter and the air filter and the pollen filter on the car. I have got 4 new NGK sparkplugs for it but the rubber off of one of the HT leads has come off on the sparkplug already in so ive got to try and get that off.

Heard some people mention the Lambda sensor could be dodgy?

not sure but i never use the AC and i drive properly, revs not above 2.5K and normally accelerate quite calmly but Im sure this car should be doing above 33.8mpg!!
any ideas?
