The smell of petrol is a sign of unburnt fuel. I suggest you have a look at the coils /s, induction temperature sensor or TDC sensor if fitted.
I have heard of numerous situations were the diagnosis equipment has not picked up these type of faults. Oh for a decent mechanic who knows how to diagnose problems using his experience. I feel a little piece from The "Little Britain" series coming on - "The computer says "No"
