As it's a 1998 model, you probably have the same Sigma alarm that the dealer fitted on my 1998 Laguna. They rebrand it as a Renault Silver or Renault Gold alarm (I forget which) but it's basically a standard Sigma unit.
There's plenty of references to the keypad in the instructions, but the keypad is an option and the dealers don't include it in the standard fit. To be able to do this, you'd have to buy the keypad (if you can still get them) then find the alarm control box and plug it in.
Part of the problem is that the control box could be anywhere. On the Laguna, they'd put the box in a hidden compartment beneath the carpet under the driver's seat - if you moved the seat fully forward, you could get into the compartment from the rear passenger footwell.
