My old man R.I.P. always recommended some stuff called Nippon. Which the ants loved, they would carry it back to the nest to feed the others. Result, 1 dead nest.
He would use a sheet of glass, or a tin lid, what have you. To deposit a small puddle uf the stuff, which the ants would smell & come to feast. Advantage being, that you can remove the Nippon, when in his case the kids / cats were about, in yours when you wish to use the car.
I swear by boiling water however.
