Renault Scenic - Electronics - Alternator replacement advice - 2002 Scenic

Hi All
I have to go and recover my car today. It apparently developed a burning smell yesterday outside my Wifeís friendís house. Her Husband looked under the bonnet and said it was coming from the alternator, which was very vey, hot to the touch. I thought it was developing a noisy bearing, so that'll teach me!
Anyway, I mentioned to a mate that I have to change the alternator and he seems to think Iíll need a special Renault tool to set the auxiliary drive belt tension???
Is this true? The car is a 02 Scenic DCi with air-con. Can I replace the alternator or is there some special tools needed. Any advice greatly received.
Currently in Taipan's garage:
2003 Renault Megane 1.5 DCi
