What caused this on Renault scenic

Hi I have 2004 Renault scenic and the other day my wife rang and said the handbrakes made a ping noise and the lever is going all the way up.
So I stripped it to look under the handbrake lever and where the 2 cables join handbrake one of them had come off but when I went to put it back on one of the cables were about a inch longer.
Will it be that the cable has stretched or maybe a problem with the brake I did go to the back and the cable moved freely when pushed.
Thanks for any help
