Believe me, we've all done it at least once. I never leave my car in gear when I park it, but loaned it one lunchtime to someone who did. I was on the verge of phoning the RAC when I actually worked out what was going on.
If you get fooled by it twice (well for more than 10 seconds) then you can feel free to consider yourself silly
Later models tell you to 'press clutch and start' if the car's in gear, and tell you to 'press brake and start' if it isn't. Clearly, Renault have had enough negative feedback on this problem to modify the instrument cluster and give you more warning.
