Temp gauge problem now misfiring when labouring

Recenlty bought this Clio II, 1.2 16valve , noticed the temperature gauge was not working , fitted new sensor and cured the problem only to create a new one.

When engine is cold all is fine, idling, starting running, when engine gets warm the minor problem is observed.
The car missfires or judders only when slightly labouring, but once the revs pick up all is fine, the car starts, accelerates and idles fine.

I am presuming the temp sensor controlled some other component, that had not moved for some time due to the faulty temp sensor, now that is fixed the "other" component is sticking.

Any ideas what it can be?
ps the car speedo is also intermittent, but dont think the two are related, the speedo sensor is being replaced today.
