Thank you Bigshow for taking interest but I think I may have put myself rather badly.
All dash lighting is working according to manufacturers specification in that the backlight led's are working as is the dimmer switch.
The complete system is working according to how Renault wanted it to work when it was in the production stage.
What I am saying is that the there is insufficient artificial light to clearly see what the instruments are saying during normal daytime driving conditions. In other words, after staring out into the road for a while when driving and then looking down into the instruments, the area is too dismal to see clearly. I hasten to add that night driving is a great pleasure and dash illumination is perfect.
In my opinion, the instruments should have been situated nearer to the driver.
This is a common fault with a lot of cars where style has dictated to design to the detriment of instrument visability.
Dare I ask if anyone else sees it this way ?
