Unhappy intermittent starting problems

I have a 2000 (W) reg Renault Clio Grande 1.2.

I have only had it a year and since then it has had a number of problems, but just recently it has started to have random issues starting where it will try and start when I turn the key, but it won't start, my mileage on the tripometer will clear, but it doesn;t affect my radio or clock, and then next time I try and start it, it starts fine.

There does not seem to be any logic with when it happens. YEsterday morning it did it and set off my hazard lights. And the other day I drove about 30 miles to work, stopped the car and when I got back in about 30 minutes later it did again.

Any suggestions you might have as to what the problem might be I would really appreciate, as I am becoming a rather nervous driver.
