Also with drum brakes, makes sure that there is no lip on the edge of the drum.
Usually, the contact area wears a little which leaves this lip.
So when you adjust so the drums just slip on, even tight enough to need a little persuasion, there is still a ruddy great gap between shoes and drum.
Even if the self adjustment takes this up, you will not be getting full contact on the shoes.
Remove the lip.
I usually bolt the drum inside out on the hub and gently clean off with a belt sander.
