Hi James - if you look in the Haynes manual the securing nut that holds the top mount on the strut is not down inside a hole as you describe - looks like your top mount has broken and will need replaced. To overcome this problem you will need to compress the spring with a set of compressors and that hopefully should let the pressure off the rubber mount and allow you to get a ring spanner on. Under no circumstances release the nut without compressing the spring as you are likley to suffer serious injury. If you have a look at position of the nut on the strut on the other side it may help you see the problem.
