I have removed the 2 small bolts and the strut is on my work mate clamped still.

I've looked at the link you provided. I've seen this before and it tells me what the Haynes manual says, which is to counter hold the piston rod with an allen key and unscrew the nut with a ring spanner.

You will see from the picture I've attached that it's not possible to get a spanner onto the nut because the nut is within a raised metal ring.

Would an offset ring spanner work? I don't have one so would like to know if this type of spanner would fit down the hole before spending even more money. What do you think? I could always return the snapper if it's no good I suppose.

What a nightmare of a job!
