He obviously didn't want to sell you the Honda either.
Any decent salesman would have offered you bottom book price and promptly sent the Laguna straight to auction. He obviously sells that many cars that he can pick and choose who he sells to. His attitude may well have lost him a sale. Most dealers pass on unwanted cars to auction or sell them to other dealers who sell them as trade cars "sold as seen".
Granted, earlier Lag II's haven't the best reputation for reliability, but I bet he wouldn't touch a Mondeo because they are too popular and wouldn't consider trading a Vectra because they are driven by salesman, a VW Passat would also be a non starter because they are reliable but boring so nobody wants them.
