Handbrake not working on one side

I had to remove the rear pads and calipers for cleaning a few months ago. The pads had been binding so one of them was a bit worn. Also the little spring clips were damaged but I decided to leave them for a while. However I recently noticed that the handbrake isn't working on one side. It seems that the piston isn't self adjusting so doesn't come into contact with the disc. I intend replacing the pads and just wondered if anyone had any experience of this and what can be done about it.
I also notice a slight shudder when braking lightly but it disappears when I brake heavily, the brakes are also a bit snachy.
Is it worth paying Renault prices for the pads or should I just get them from a factor. THANKS
